Chronic Disease Prescriptions on the Rise for Americans

A recent study from Medco Health Solutions Inc. reveals alarming statistics on the number of chronic medications being used in America.  Over half of all insured Americans are taking prescription medications for chronic conditions, representing a 4 percent increase since 2001 and suggesting Americans buy more prescription medicine than any other country.

The New Yorks Times recently reported that even individuals with health insurance coverage are being strained by increasing premiums, deductibles and copays.  Millions of Americans are struggling to pay their medical bills and are delaying care in order to deal with escalating costs and the economic slowdown.

Marrying for Health Insurance

A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that seven percent of Americans say they or someone in their household decided to tie the knot in the last year so they could receive healthcare benefits.  In addition, health care costs outranked housing costs and rising food costs as an issue of significant concern.  A companion poll also found that more Americans are supportive of lowering health care costs than they are concerned about expanding health care access to uninsured Americans.
