CBO Releases Report on Costs and Benefits of Health IT

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently released a report stating that health information technology (HIT) has the potential to transform our health care system by reducing costs and improving quality.
CBO examined the benefits of HIT, the role of the federal government to promote the adoption of this technolgoy, as well as the possible barriers to implementation. While the paper provides no policy recommendations, it does review in detail the benefits to adopting health IT including: reducing duplication of diagnostic tests; prompting physicians to prescribe generic drugs; reminding physicians of appropriate preventative care; and helping physicians better manage patients with chronic disease.
