Health Insurance Vital (and Tough to Acquire) for Early Retirees

A recent article in the New York Times explains that early retirees, those between the ages of 55-64 years, face increased difficulty when trying to access health insurance coverage in the individual market.  With less than a third of employers offering retiree health benefits, early retirees are struggling to gain and maintain adequate health coverage prior to becoming eligible for Medicare.

Affinity Group Underwriters reported that 40 percent of the people between the ages of 55-64 years that they are trying to place are denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions.  For individuals not in a state with guaranteed-issue laws (Maine, New Jersey, New York and Vermont) they may be completely unable to access health coverage; and without some form of community rating, they may not be able to afford the high premiums.
