A new study published Monday in the journal Health Affairs reports that the uninsured will spend $30 billion on out-of-pocket health expenses this year and in addition, other parties including the governement will spend about $56 billion covering costs for those who lack health insurance.

The study, reported on by a team from George Mason University, found that in order to fit the bill for the uninsured's uncompensated care governement agencies are paying about $42.9 billion and some physicians and hospitals are even forgoing profit.  According to federal data, healthcare spending which accounts for 16.3% of the gross domestic product for 2007 could almost double in the next 10 years.
