What can we do?
More states should expand their Medicaid programs. When patients become Medicaid beneficiaries, they become eligible for the transportation benefit, along with every other health care benefit they may be ineligible for because of the current coverage gap.
Eliminate unnecessary administrative bureaucracy. As PAF case managers have noted, superfluous forms and inconsistentcy across benefit programs creates administrative delays and discourages patients from attempting to access their benefits.
Encourage physicians to include transportation access as part of their routine assessment of a patient. Physicians should be aware when lack of transportation will affect their patients' health.
Encourage insurers to include transportation benefits as part of their plan structures.
