    CA Committee Considers Specialty Tiers Legislation

    The California Senate is considering a bill that would limit patients' out-of-pocket costs for drugs on the specialty tier. The bill was most recently referred to the Senate Health Committee. Once drugs are placed on this tier, patients no longer can pay just a simple copay amount. Instead, they must pay a percentage of the cost of the drug, which can cost hundreds, if not thousands, per prescription.

    NPAF Applauds Reintroduction of the Patients' Access to Treatment Act

    National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) today praised Reps. David McKinley and Lois Capps for their leadership in sponsoring the HR 1600, the Patients' Access to Treatment Act. The Patients' Access to Treatment Act would lessen the financial burden on patients by requiring commercial health plans to limit cost-sharing requirements for specialty drug tiers.

    Patient Advocates Rally to Pass 21st Century Cures

    The 21st Century Cures Act, which National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) made the focus of its annual Patient Congress, passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 344-77. NPAF volunteers lobbied their legislators to support the bill, sharing their personal stories about how medical innovation saved their lives. Altogether, advocates contacted 122 different Congressional districts in support of the legislation.

    Governor Abbott signed into law today two patient-friendly bills that will help millions of patients afford necessary medications and promote transparency in the insurance market. HB 1621 will ensure that patients retain their coverage and keep their medications while they appeal an adverse coverage decision.  This change ensures that patients who receive a negative decision don't have a lapse in coverage while wading through bureaucracy.

    NPAF today praised the Personalize Your Care Act of 2015 as legislation that would "not only improve individual patients' care, but also improve population health." Introduced by Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Phil Roe, M.D, the Personalize Your Care Act of 2015 would provide Medicare and Medicaid coverage for advanced care planning every five years or in the event of a change in health status, and the development of quality measures that measure concordance among the individual's goals, values and preferences.
