    Advocates Urge Ohio Legislature to Save Lives by Protecting Patients

    Patient advocates from across Ohio will gather in Columbus today for the first annual Ohio Patient Advocacy Day to urge lawmakers to protect patients by ensuring their access to lifesaving, prescribed medications.  Advocates from the National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF) will call on the Ohio Legislature to pass legislation that limits insurers’ ability to block access to needed therapies.

    National Patient Advocate Foundation Applauds Medical Debt Relief Act

    National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the patient’s voice is heard in support of access to quality, affordable health care, today applauded the introduction of the Medical Debt Relief Act. Introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), this crucial legislation would require that no new medical debt be included on a credit report until 180 days after the patient has been notified of the alleged debt, giving a consumer the sufficient opportunity to contest, pay or otherwise settle the debt before it adversely impacts their credit score.

    NPAF today released its annual Policy Principles document, which catalogs the issues the organization has found to be most pressing to patients and their related policy recommendations. Organized under the broad categories of affordability, access and quality, each chapter includes a summary of the policy matter, a mission statement and, when appropriate, a federal and a state plan for the year.

    NPAF Holds Advocacy Training in Richmond, VA

    Thirty NPAF volunteers participated in high-level advocacy training this week in Richmond, VA, reviewing legislative and lobbying techniques to advance the patient's voice nationwide. During the two-day event, volunteers attended training sessions and heard from high-level issue and advocacy experts, who also presided over the mock lobbying session in which the event culminated.
