    My mom has stage 4 kidney cancer. She had a steel rod put in her leg for the bone damage the cancer caused and had one of her kidneys taken out with a tumor in it to help slow the cancer. Mom is a strong woman! But, when it was  time to start the oral treatment the bill without insurance is about 10,000 a month for 26 pills.

    In 2008, were insured on a PPO and went to an emergency room at an in-network hospital. It was a true, life-threatening emergency - my wife was pregnant and had begun bleeding profusely. For years afterwards, we received bills from one of the ER doctors who treated her.

    My sister had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was doing well for 13 years. She was full of life and working full time.  Two years ago, she was persuaded to undergo a bone marrow transplant (BMT) for “cure”. She became totally disabled and grew weaker each day afterwards as her immune system was completely destroyed by the BMT.

    In addition to the chronic pain that I face on a daily basis I also have a syncopal or fainting disorder. This disorder is triggered by severe physical exertion as well as significant changes in barometric pressure. My current job requires that I pull heavy loads at times. In order for me to have a job that provides me with medical insurance or to receive medical care from anyone familiar with my diagnosis, I must do something that that puts me at risk.

    My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago and her medical team recommended that she get chemo and radiation post surgery. She lived in a county that required at least 30-45 min for her to travel each way to her daily radiation treatments for 6 weeks along with a once a week chemo that lasted 3 hours.

    My son was born 6 weeks early and stayed in the NICU for 23 days. The hospital is in network. The neonatologist group that cares for the NICU babies was not. I work at a bank and I can be fired for bad credit and/or unpaid debts. I have a $2000 annual deductible and a $24,000 bill from the neonatologist group alone. What other industry exists, where you use a service, and find out the cost AFTER you've already used the service?
