North Carolina Advocates Rally Against Step Therapy
2016-07-14 | June 16, 2016
(Raleigh, NC) — Patient advocates, lawmakers and civic leaders gathered here today in support of patient protections against insurance barriers. Led by the National Patient Advocate Foundation, the event featured an issue briefing on step therapy practices followed by a series of meeting between patients and their legislators.
The advocates supported legislation that would make prescribed medications more accessible to patients, who currently have to “fail first” on other treatments before their insurance will cover the preferred drug.
Representative David Lewis, sponsor of the bill, welcomed the advocates and addressed the need for step therapy legislation. Also participating in an issue briefing were:
- Steven Prakken, MD, Duke University, Pain Society of the Carolinas
- Gwenesta Melton, MD, Rheumatologist
- Christina Weason, North Carolina Government Relations Director, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network
- Michelle MacArthur, Patient Advocate, Arthritis Foundation
