In 2008, were insured on a PPO and went to an emergency room at an in-network hospital. It was a true, life-threatening emergency – my wife was pregnant and had begun bleeding profusely. For years afterwards, we received bills from one of the ER doctors who treated her. Our insurance paid him as an out-of-network doctor even though he saw us at an in-network hospital. The worst part was that he was actually in-network with our plan at the time we saw him. But he and both our insurance company claimed that he was in-network only when he saw patients at his own office – he was out-of-network if he saw patients at the ER at the in-network hospital! The bill went to collections and I was hounded by bill collectors. I disputed the collection and eventually, they stopped billing us.
