    Advocates applaud the signing of South Dakota oral parity legislation

    Advocates applauded here today as Governor Dennis Daugaard signed into law legislation that will make necessary medical treatments more accessible for cancer patients statewide. SB 101 requires insurance plans that already provide coverage for chemotherapy delivered through an IV to provide comparable coverage for chemotherapy given as a pill. Thirty-seven states plus DC have also enacted similar legislation.

    The Future of Advocacy

    Tom Hall had exhausted all chemotherapy medicines available and his cancer was spreading.  Without hope, he turned to genetic testing.  FoundationOne, based on his genetic profile, recommended five off-label medicines, which slowed the progression of his disease and gave him more time with his family. A personalized medicine success story?  Absolutely.  However, part of that story is missing: the part where Medicare denied coverage based on his off-label use until ultimately a Patient Advocate Foundation case manager submitted a successful appeal.
